The Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS) initiative began in November 2006 with the purpose of investigating the issues and opportunities of a common strategy and possibly a common system for electronic document management at the University of Alberta (all campuses). A committee was struck and met throughout 2007. This committee scoped the opportunities for electronic document and record management at the University of Alberta, learned about the capabilities of such systems through a series of vendor presentations, oversaw an electronic document management pilot in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, and produced a white paper. This white paper outlined the needs and benefits for electronic document and record management at the University of Alberta and provided a number of criteria that could form the basis for an RFP.
After a initial failed implementation, the enterprise edition of the Alfresco open source enterprise content management system is being investigated as a potential campus-wide EDRMS solution.
